IF
A BYPASS IS TO BE BUILT.....
A. MAINE
DOT BYPASS OPTIONS.
The Maine
Department of Transportation has proposed five bypass routes, north
of the Town Center of Wiscasset. See www.wiscassetroute1corridor.com.
B.
John Van Orsdell route with a new bridge and
tunnel across the Sheepscot River and south of Davis Island, with
a link where the current Route 1 meets the Edgecomb shore at Cod
Cove. It could be called the Causeway-Tunnel-Causeway route.
C.
SSB1 (Southern Short Bypass) route. Originally designated
C-1 (See Links to Articles (old) for
26 July 2001 and 28 June Times Record articles.)
This route would go from Route 1 near Pottle Cove Road and cross
the railroad tracks and then run parallel to the tracks until before
the Yacht Club and then enter a cut-and-cover tunnel to an opening
before the Davey Bridge. Variation SSB1a would be a cars-only
bypass, and variation SSB1b would make the 2-lane bypass one-way
North, only. That would make the existing Route 1 roadway
one-way South in the portion covered by the bypass.
