My hat goes off to people who have nothing better to do than to fight progress and add to the cost of government. If any one of these people who opposes a bypass uses the US Route 1 bypass around Damariscotta, US Route 1 bypass around Belfast, US Route 1 between Bath and Brunswick, Interstate 295 or Interstate 95 than, you are a hypocrite. Those are all bypass highways and I would bet a million dollars these crybabies against a bypass have used these roadways. Next time, don't go around Damariscotta, don't go around Belfast, take old Route 1 from Brunswick to Portland and to New Hampshire. Hypocrites are one of the lowest forms of humans and the most destructive. They only want what is best for them. And the next time you see traffic backed up for miles trying to get through Wiscasset, do as you have been, think of yourself, don't think of the elderly person who is sitting there trying to get to Portland for special medical treatments, just keep thinking of what you want and stop using interstate highways and the bypasses already built.

One commenter asked how many more people are going to die. There is no bloodbath as a result of the backup. Has anybody died as a result of the backup? A $100 million by pass is no guarantee against tragic accidents. Another states that W. merchants are "greedy". I casually know a number of present and former merchants, and not one is in favor of the current situation. Some are even pro by pass. There is no greed issue here. Your typical W. merchant is a small business person with little to no political power.

How about marking the alternative routes that already exist around the Davey bridge and Wiscasset downtown. Most locals know at least some of them. Marking these routes would give people unfamiliar with the area an alternative to the jam. Perhaps minor road improvements (alignments, intersections) could be instituted as necessary. I agree that a pedestrian tunnel or bridge is much preferred to a $100 million bridge across the bay. Pedestrian movement is 50% of the problem with downtown traffic. Put the peds under or over the street. Has anyone pointed out that the $100 million bridge would actually make the trip longer for anyone not headed north on Route 27? Such a bridge may help for 3 months of the year, but would actually be an impediment the other 9.

This entire site is a joke. "If a bypass is needed......?? What planet are you on ? Why don't you stop posting useless facts and figures and ask yourself HOW MANY MORE PEOPLE ARE GOING TO DIE AS A RESULT OF THIS SELFISH INSANITY !

Bill's comments are right on. Until something is done to fix this ridiculous situation, I will not be spending a single dollar in Wiscasset. Hopefully others will do the same. Why can't there be a short term, more simple solution? How about police directing traffic and pedestrians? What about building a couple of pedestrian tunnels?
